The Ceramics Program at Elsie Allen is designed to inspire the creativity of every student by progressing though a series of hand building assignments leading up to working on the Ceramic Wheel. We become fluent in the academic vocabulary associated with the Elements of Design: Line, Shape, Space, Value, Texture, and Color. We also address the Principles of Design: Unity, Proportion, Balance, Harmony, Rhythm, Movement, Pattern, and Emphasis. We learn the skills needed to be successful in many different hand building techniques including Pinching, Slab Rolling, Coiling, Sculptural (both Relief and Intaglio.) We also look at the historical implication of art and practice deconstruction and looking at the significance of meaningful artwork.
